rage - sure it worked. And I assure that has nothing to do with me leaving just now... (Really :))

Bye... it's been fun as usual.

OK, I've got to get going...Halloween awaits!
Hi and Bye to Beldin! I'm so sorry I've got to go!
rage: I'm just curious, what instrument do you play? Or do you play several? Post back...I'll check later.

Bye, everybody! Great spending a little time with you all!

OK rage, I'm willing to concede that it ultimately comes down to taste. I guess I feel that that much virtuosity and time-signature-hopping can actually get in the way of my personal music-enjoying experience. My problem is that you seem to equate virtuosity with talent. It would have been one thing for you to come on the board last night and say "boy, those Bronze bands only play medium speed at fastest, and doesn't that suck". It's quite another for you to proclaim a near-complete talent void.

G'night, drdan!

Erika - Ok (not kidding either). E me.

Attempting to avoid confusion, let me clarify...that should have read, "theory-heads." Not "thory-heads." (What's a thory-head????)

rage - I understand what you're saying. It just sounds like you're placing musicianship over creativity and I don't agree with that. As more of a programmer/composer than a virtuoso musician myself, I'm certainly biased, but I would say truly satisfying music comes more from the soul than the fingers.

Lisa - see below - I agree with you - and I certainly don't feel underappreciated. Especially here.

rage: Well, know I have to eat a bit of crow, because I didn't read the posts myself, I only heard a rendition of it from a third party. So, that's fine, and as I said before, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if you'd listen to Treason (they used that song, albeit briefly, on the show) you'll notice that the musical arrangement and the chord progrssions are anything BUT "lowest-common-denominator." It's such a bizarre song, musically - the chorus, in particular - that many "thory-heads" as I call them think it's an atrocity. Oh, and i WISH we were more "pop" in a way...unfortunately, most of the labels we've encountered have said we're "exceptionally talented, but not commercial enough." Ah, well.

Chris:Hey! Me too. My 4th wedding anniversary was last week. =) We should all go out! (I'm actually not kidding...)

Oops forgot my yellow on that last one...

Danne - On the contrary, I place a high value on that particular ramble. In all seriousness, I agree with you that film music shouldn't call attention to itself. And thanks for the kind words.

drdan - I compose the background music. Like what you hear when Buffy's in a big fight, or in a love scene.

Hi, Shannen! nice to meet you, as well.

For any interested in making their own judgements on the merits of Velvet Chain's music, here's a link:

rage - are you saying virtuosity by itself redeems a song or band from the shackles of "lowest common denominator" pop music?

Erika - is it a problem if I'm already married? (Cause I am)

Chris Beck (composer) says:

What a coincidence...I spoke of the ignorant, and they arrive! Well, I won't bother trying to defend myself, as everyone's taste in music is different, rage, but Cibo Matto, Nerf Herder, Sarah McLachlan, et al have had PLENTY of success on their own merits, so I doubt you can unequivocally say they "suck."
Chris: Hmmm....maybe I should meet you first? Before we set the date, that is...
Shadowslayer:Looks like you've got your chance...lol =)

drdan - well, the limb you went out on... just broke.
I didn't write the main theme - Nerf Herder did.

drdan: I answered you a while ago. =) Guess you missed it. I told you it was just a touch of flu.
Eidilleg: I'm not taking notes, so I hope I spelled that right! Anyway, Hi!
blueronin: Hello, and thanks for the support!
SLaYeR: Awwww....you're so sweet!
?: Well, the ignorant often have the loudest mouths. lol
Gotta scroll...see what I've missed...

Shadowslayer - That's kind of you to say...
RJ - It was the same tune with a different orchestration. That particular tune functions as a love theme for Buffy & Angel. I first used it in "Surprise".
drdan - If you hurry, and you live in one of 8 or so cities in the US, you can catch "The Alarmist" (Stanlet Tucci & David Arquette & Kate Capshaw star) which I did the music for. I've scored a number of indie films which will be released over the next year or two...
? - very envious yes...

Chris Beck (composer) says:

I'm Kid - Yes I'm the composer.
The last time I was in a band was in college; we were called "The Manics". The first time I was in a band was in junior high; we were "Chris and the Cupcakes". Really.
Not currently in need of drummers for the score, sorry...
(AndI just reread your question, and I think you meant "do you get to use a real orchestra", and the answer is no, I do it mostly with synthesizers and samplers with a couple of live players)

^
Chris Beck (composer) says:
(Sat Oct 31 18:53:49 1998 207.217.245.138)
Erika - so is that a yes? :)

Shadowslayer - I wasn't expressing fear for a lack of defense so much as lamenting the fact that fewer people listen to (and as a result slam) the score than they do the songs. I want to be slamworthy just like Erika!

I'm Kid: Hi, there! I assume you're being facetious, so let me offer this by way of explanaiton...I'm CRAZY BUSY! I barely have time to return e-mails from my own mother, so I apologize if you've felt ignore. I am very good about replying to e-mail in general, however, so feel free to keep sending them! I really appreciate the support! =)
Chris Beck: Why, thank you! =) (Blush, blush) That's very kind of you, especially as you are another musician, and I really enjoy your work! Oh, and the flattery-part was cool, too. hehe

JSG - I have zero to do with the choice of songs - I just write the score (background music). I suppose I could make some suggestions to the producers at some point... FWIW I agree that a local up-can-comer would have been cooler than Third Eye Blind.

?: Well, I appreciate evryone's support! And if the guy was implying that a group like Cibo Matto sucks, he obviously has no tast, and so cannot be taken seriously. ;-)
Shadowslayer: I'm sorry, did you want me to punish you? Because I'm not really a heavy disciplinarian. And anyway, I simply misunderstood what you meant, so no transgression was committed! =)
Hiya, RJ!

OK so I just went to the Velvet Chain site. I have two things to say:

1) If "Frenchie" isn't some seriously funky s**t then I'll eat my tennis shoe.

2) I want to marry Erika.

Now I can truthfully say that guy last night didn't know what he was talking about...

And hey, at least you get a reaction. I was sorta hoping he'd rail on the score music as well...

Cynthialil - yes, I did the score for BB&B (One of my favorites from last season).

Avarice: Hey! Nice to see you again, and yes, I'm very excited about these new tunes we're working on. AND, it will be very cool to meet you all at the PBP '99. =)
Jade: Hiya! Long time, no see! Yes, our last gig of '98 went smashingly, thank you. Not quite the visual spectacle it can be at other clubs (the lighting was horrific, for example), but sonically, it was quite a success!
Shadowslayer: Oh, that's OK. I think two are enogh, for now...unless people start spontaneiously volunteering out of the woodwork or something, that is...

Just scrolled for the music talk last night.

Don't listen to any of it Erika! You're awesome.

(Well, having only worked on the show since season 2, I've never exactly heard your stuff but I'M SURE IT'S GREAT!)

And yes you can call me Chris, and my Halloween is going great if utterly un-Halloween-like.

Shadowslayer- this weeks work does not exist. (break in between shows - zzzzzzz)

Hi, SLaYeR!
Shadowslayer: OH, I'm not eloquent enough for you, is that it? Hmmph! Y'know, simplicity is sometimes the most eloquent way of all to say something...
Violet: Eek! I am having a memory lapse...which advice was that?
?: Yep, sure did. Thanks!
Fax1:Wow! That's quite impressive...I think I should go check out last night's archives...lol Hey, maybe you should be one of my bodyguards, too...although I guess two are more than sufficient. =)
